Santa Margarita Eagles Football ESPN Visits SMCHS for Feature on Carson Palmer ’98 and Mark Sanchez
Mark Sanchez was the ball boy when Carson was the star high school quarterback. He also played 2 years for Santa Margarita. NFL rookie Mark Sanchez faced longtime buddy and hero Carson Palmer, ’98, in the NFL playoffs on Saturday, Jan. 8, Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals and Sanchez of the New York Jets.

LB Troy Willett was chosen to play for the South Team in the annual Orange County All-Star Game. The game annually features the top 72 graduated football players in Orange County.

Head Coach Harry Welch was named Orange County Register Coach of the Year. LB Troy Willett was named to the OC Register All-County 2nd Team.

OL Tom Chiarello, LB Troy Willett, RB Spencer Tyson, and LB Andrew Spangenberg were named 1st Team All-Trinity League. TE Max Tuerk, WR Reiley Higgins, DL Doug Woodward, and LB Matt Andersen were named 2nd Team.

Orange Lutheran 38 - Eagles 20
The Eagles (3-7, 0-5) end the season with a loss to the Orange Lutheran Lancers. Senior linebacker and Captain Troy Willett, collected 12 tackles. Troy finished the year with not only 140 tackles but two sacks, a forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, an interception and four passes broken up. On his final high school play Willett also scored his first rushing touchdown. Senior RB Spencer Tyson ran for 92 yards. Spencer finished as the Eagles’ leading rusher for the second straight year as he ran for 968 yards in nine games of action - an average of 108 per game.

Mater Dei 41 - Eagles 24
The Eagles (3-6, 0-4) scored twice late in the fourth quarter on TD passes of 78 and 21 yards from Bobby Crane to Reiley Higgins.

Servite 48 - Eagles 26
Cory Thompson returned a 96-yard kickoff return for a TD. Quarterback Bobby Crane added two 1-yard touchdowns, and Reilly Higgins scored on a 59-yard halfback pass from Colten Christensen.

St. John Bosco 35 - Eagles 14
The Eagles (3-4, 0-2) lose to St. John Bosco (4-3). QB Reiley Higgins passed and ran for two Touchdowns. Senior Captain and linebacker Troy Willett collected 14 tackles bringing his total to 101 on the year through just seven games.

The Eagles scored a late TD but failed on the 2 point attempt.

Eagles 41 - Orange 6
The Eagles (3-2) beat the Orange Panthers (0-4) at Saddleback JC. RB Spencer Tyson led the charge for Santa Margarita, rushing for a season-high 238 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.

La Costa Canyon 28 - Eagles 14
The Eagles (2-2) lose by 14 points to the #12 team in the state.

Eagles 34 - Foothill 20
Spencer Tyson rushed for 147 yards and Reiley Higgins compiled four touchdowns to fuel a second half Santa Margarita comeback over Foothill in a non-league game Friday night at Tustin High. The defense finished strong forcing five second half turnovers.

Eagles 41 - Poway 17
The Eagles win their first home game of the season against Poway of San Diego. The offense was led by RBs Cory Thomson and Spencer Tyson. The Eagles defense led by Andrew Spangenberg, held Poway to 27 yards in the first half.

The Eagles lose their season opener to the Dana Hills Dolpins.
