Redlands - Game Notes

The Redlands game marks the 8th time in nine games that the Eagles have squared off against a Division I opponent, and the second time in four games against a Citrus Belt League foe at Saddleback College. In Week 11 of 2001 they defeated Rialto 43-30 behind 254 yards and four touchdowns from Ashton White.

The Eagles are 5-1-1 in their last seven and 10-2-1 in their last 13 games against Division I teams. Last year, they finished 8-2-2 and won their 4th league championship in six years. They lost to Los Alamitos 29-20 in the CIF Playoffs.

With the win over El Modena the Eagles have gone 7-0-1 in their last eight season openers, and 10-3-1 overall. They have a 10-3 record in Week 2 games and an 11-2 mark in their first game of the year at Saddleback College.

The Eagles are ranked 4th in Orange County, 7th in the West by USA Today, 7th in CIF-SS Division I, 7th in Southern California per the L.A. Times, 8th in California per CalHi Sports, and 14th in the West per Student Sports. They have been ranked in the Orange County Top 10 for 72 of the last 80 polls including 17 in a row, and in the Division I Top 10 by the CIF office in 28 of the 32 weekly polls since joining Division I in 1999.

This is the first game between Santa Margarita and the Redlands Terriers. In 2001 the Terriers won the Citrus Belt League title outright for the first time since 1974 and took an 11-0 record into the CIF Division I quarter-finals where they lost 44-28 to Mater Dei. Redlands is off to a 1-0 start after knocking off Yucaipa 28-6.

The Terriers are led by 11th year Coach Jim Walker who has a mark of 76-39 (.661) at Redlands. Prior to coming to Redlands in 1992 Coach Walker held the reigns at Temple City and St. Paul.

Head Coach Jim Hartigan - AFCA
Jim Hartigan, 42, is 117-39-3 (.745) in his 14th season as the Eagles' varsity Head Coach. Overall, Coach Hartigan has a 133-42-4 (.754) record in 16 seasons if you include 10-0 and 6-3-1 lower level teams that he led in 1987 and 1988 respectively before the Eagles fielded varsity teams. He has won four League Championships and two CIF Titles in the past six years and has seen his team ranked as high as 12th in the nation (USA Today). Jim was honored as the both the 1996 and 1997 Daily Pilot Sea View League Coach of the Year, CIF-SS Division V Coach of the Year and the National Football Foundation Orange County Coach of the Year. Coach Hartigan has directed his squads into the playoffs in 12 of their 13 seasons, including seven in a row, and has never posted a losing season. He has coached eight High School All-Americans, 72 players who have gone on to play in the collegiate ranks and five who have gone on to the NFL. His 28-game winning streak from 1996-98 is the second best in Orange County history.
