This is the Eagles' 104th Varsity game, and 54th home game. Santa Margarita's all-time home record is 42-10-1 (.788). The Eagles are currently 77-25-1 (.748) as they enter Week 8 of their ninth season.

Santa Margarita is 7-0, and ranked No. 7 in the Western United States by USA Today, No. 5 in California (961 teams overall), No. 1 in both California Division II and CIF-SS Division V, and 2nd in Orange County (69 teams) behind Mater Dei.

The 7-0 start is the best start since the 1990 team started 12-0.

The Eagles have won a school record 18 games in a row. They have also won 20 of 21, and 29 of their last 34. Their last loss was to Servite in Week 3 of the 1996 season. The 18 wins is the best in Saddleback Valley history ahead of El Toro's streak of 17 set in 1986-87.

The County record for consecutive wins is 32 set by Edison from 1979-81. The State record is 71 and counting by Concord De La Salle.

During the streak, the Eagles have outscored the opposition 719-155, an average margin of victory of 31.3 points. Over the past 13 wins the Eagles have averaged 44.6 points per game.

The Eagles have also won nine straight at home and 12 straight on the road dating back to 1995.

Over the past 12 games the Eagles have led 48-14, 27-6, 17-0,

21-0, 38-0, 31-6, 31-0, 48-7, 35-0, 17-7, 42-0 and 17-6 at halftime. An average score of 31-4.

The Eagles are averaging 46.43 points per game. The County record was set last year by Tustin at 47.15 points per game (613 points in 13 games). The Eagles are on pace to score 650 points over 14 games.

This is the sixth game between the Vaqueros and Eagles. The Eagles hold a 3-2 series lead. In 1996, The Eagles put on one of their most dominating defensive performances in recent memory as they posted a 17-0 win before 3,500 at Irvine High. The win put the Eagles in first place in the Sea View League for the first time ever. The high-powered Vaq's were limited to 14 yards on 27 rushing attempts, while QB Jared Flint was held to 11 completions for a mere 66 yards. RB Billy Newman led the way once again with 127 yards rushing, while Andrew Holstein spearheaded the defense with eight tackles and two of the team's seven sacks.

COACHES
Jim Hartigan is 77-25-1 (.748) in his ninth varsity season as Head Coach. Overall Coach Hartigan has a 93-28-2 (.756) if you include 10-0 and 6-3-1 lower level teams that he led in 1987 and 1988 respectively. He was honored as the 1996 CIF-SS Division V Coach of the Year. The Vaqueros are led by 17th year coach Terry Henigen who is 99-68-3 (.582) overall at Irvine.
