1995 EAGLES

Eagles 28 - St. Augustine 6

MISSION VIEJO, CA., September 29, 1995 – The Eagles wasted little time in dismantling the Saints. On the opening drive SM went 80 yards in 13 plays behind Billy Newman. Newman's 14-yard scoring run would be the first of four touchdowns for the junior, which tied a school record set by Josh Ireland in 1991. Newman scored on the second drive after the defense stuffed St. Augustine's initial series. The Saints were limited to 83 total yards, while only managing a score late in the game. The Eagles were silent in the second quarter, but Newman scored one play after Matt Nickels returned a punt 49 yards for a school record. The Eagles 4-0 record would pit them against Fountain Valley at 3-1.

Newman lifts Santa Margarita

MISSION VIEJO, CA., September 29, 1995 – Junior running back Billy Newman tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns to lift ninth-ranked Santa Margarita to a 28-6 victory against St. Augustine of San Diego in front of an estimated 2,500 at Saddleback College on Friday.

Newman, who finished with 96 yards on 15 carries, scored on runs of 14, 1, 25 and 1 yard. Two of the runs came in the first quarter and two in the third.

"We gave him a break on defense tonight," Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan said. “That seemed to give him some extra energy."

Newman improved his season statistics to 344 yards on 63 carries with seven touchdowns.

"The O-line stepped up," Newman said. “Last year was a tough year, so going 4-0 to start this year is great. This is a big win for us going into next week's game."

Friday the Eagles (4-0) will take on Division I Fountain Valley of the Sunset League.

The Eagles were in control the entire game, although they had two turnovers inside their own 20-yard line.

St. Augustine (2-2), an all-boys Parochial school with an enrollment of 600, averted a shutout when Aaron Banuelos scored on a 36-yard run with 3:51 left.
