LAST WEEK’S RECAP & HIGHLIGHTS AT Mission Viejo
- Young and rebuilding Santa Margarita Catholic hosted local rival Mission Viejo at Trabuco Hills High School. The two schools, separated by just eight miles, met for the fourth-consecutive season and seventh time overall.
- After spotting the Diablos a 21-0 lead at half, the Eagles looked more confident in the second-half, especially on defense, and shutdown the Mission Viejo offense, even forcing a couple of turnovers. SMCHS won the battle of the half as they staged a comeback with 10 points in the final two stanzas, but eventually fell short, 21-10.
- Derek Wilkins led the defense with one forced fumble (that led to a score), one sack and 10 tackles. Gregory Doyle led all tacklers with 15 on the night, while Anthony Comestro chipped-in with 10.
- Shane Cova picked-up a fumble and ran it 52 yards for the Eagles first score of the game. It was their third defensive touchdown in the first two games. Tyler Hartigan registered one interception -- returning it 35 yards.
- SMCHS ran their consecutive-game scoring stream to 166 games. The last time the Eagles were shutout was in September, 2004 at Orange Lutheran, 19-0. The Eagles have only been shutout four times in their existence -- one time each in 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
HEAD COACH BRENT VIESELMEYER
Brent Vieselmeyer enters his first season as the Head Varsity Football Coach at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Coach Vieselmeyer was hired and introduced at a ceremonial announcement on February 19 by school President Andy Sulick. He comes to the Eagles from Kansas University where he held the position of Offensive Analyst, most recently.
Prior to coaching last season with the Jayhawks, Vieselmeyer was with the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League for three seasons. He joined the Raider franchise in 2015 after spending 15 years coaching at the collegiate and high school levels. While at Oakland, Vieselmeyer held positions as Assistant Linebacker Coach and Safeties Coach.
Vieselmeyer spent two seasons as Co-Defensive Coordinator at Houston Baptist University from 2013-14. Prior to joining the Huskies, he served as head coach at highly-respected Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, beginning in March 2007, where he launched the football program.
At Valor Christian, he compiled a 55-11 record (.833), leading the Eagles to four-straight state championships in 2009 (3A), 2010 (4A), 2011 (4A) and 2012 (5A). He was named the Denver Post “Colorado Coach of the Year” in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and was All Sport Jefferson County “Coach of the Year” in 2010.
Vieselmeyer began his coaching career at Orange (California) Lutheran High School, where he spent eight years as defensive coordinator. He led the Lancers to the 2006 Division II California state title. They also won the 2004 CIF-Southern Section Championship and were finalists in 2000, 2001 and 2003. During his career, Vieselmeyer has seen 31 of his student-athletes earn college football scholarships.
A native of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Vieselmeyer played linebacker at the University of Redlands (California) and Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in education from Concordia in 1999, and a Master of Arts in educational administration from the University of Phoenix in 2005.
Coach and his wife Marnie have two daughters, Payton and Quinn.

9 Colt Fulton - Quarterback, Junior (6-4 / 195)
- Made first varsity start and threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns in win at Redlands East Valley.

Notes: Cherry Creek has experienced a large amount of success over the past four decades, having won nine state championships. Dave Logan, the voice of the Denver Broncos and coach of six Colorado State Championships (with a rival of Creek’s named Mullen), was hired to be the Cherry Creek head football coach in January, 2012. Logan set the career record for wins at the Class 5A level as his Bruins defeated Denver East 56-28. It was his 252nd career win, passing former Cherry Creek coach Fred Tesone, who won 251 games from 1962-89. Logan is now 263-64 (.804) overall in his career, which has included stops at Arvada West, Chatfield, Mullen and now Cherry Creek. He now sits in sixth place on the all-time state wins list.

The Eagles came up short against the then No. 1 ranked team in Colorado (Class 5A). Running back Jake Thomas rushed for 111 yards on 22 attempts (5.0 average) and two touchdowns. For the Eagles, wide receiver Chase Nenad caught eight passes for 100 yards (12.5 average). Linebacker Jack Lynch registered 11 tackles and defensive end Logan Schwenke had 2 1/2 sacks. For Cherry Creek, they were led by Jayle Stacks who rushed for 95 yards and one touchdown. Seamus Henderson also scored one touchdown on the ground. Chase Penry led the Bruins in receiving with seven receptions.

- Santa Margarita tries to halt a four-game losing-streak against out-of-state opponents tonight as they take the field at Cherry Creek.
- Two losses came last season, one to this Cherry Creek squad and the other to Orem (Utah). Both of those games were played in Orange County.
- This also includes a defeat in their last road outing outside of California, in 2014 at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, Nevada.
- The first three games the Eagles ever played versus out-of-state competition, they were victorious in Nevada, Hawaii and Arizona. Those were in 1997, 2005 and 2012 respectively.

At the high school level, Bedell has also spent time as an assistant at La Mirada and Bellflower. In addition to coaching at the prep level, Bedell has 14 years of collegiate coaching experience.

2018 Game: Running back Jake Thomas ran for 152 yards on 17 attempts (8.9 average) and scored five touchdowns. The five scores was just one off the school record of six, set by Ryan Wolpin in 2012 against Carson. Quarterback Peter Costelli had another solid game with 235 yards passing and 63 yards rushing. The Eagles racked-up 513 yards of total offense and 21 first downs en route to a 54-7 victory.
