Mater Dei scores 10 TDs in highlight-filled win over Santa Margarita

LAGUNA HILLS, CA., October 6, 2017 – Mater Dei scored 42 second-quarter points – the No. 1 Monarchs and No. 4 Santa Margarita combined for 63 in the quarter – and scored 10 touchdowns to earn a 70-35 victory over the Eagles in a Trinity League opener Friday at Laguna Hills High.

Mater Dei (6-0, 1-0) moves on to play St. John Bosco on Friday, October 13 at El Camino College.

Santa Margarita (4-2, 0-1) plays at Cerritos College against Servite on Friday, October 13.

Mater Dei rushed for 274 yards in the first half with Shakobe Harper leading the way with 136 yards on 10 carries. JT Daniels completed 21 of 24 passes for 326 yards and six touchdowns. CJ Parks caught six passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught five passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Mater Dei struck first as Daniels put together an eight-play, 80-yard drive capped on 10-yard TD pass to Michael Martinez.Late in the first quarter, Santa Margarita broke loose and tied the score as Josiah Norwood scrambled around the pocket and hurled a 59-yard pass to a wide open Jake Ebach. Mater Dei came right back with a 55-yard pass Amon-Ra St. Brown that set up a 20-yard touchdown run by Nick Remigio. Then the clock turned to the second quarter and the defenses stuck to the bench.

The teams traded touchdowns three scores in the first two minutes of the quarter. Nathan Logoleo scored on a 1-yard run for Mater Dei. On the next play, Mark Eaton shredded two tackles for another 59-yard Santa Margarita touchdown. Daniels then hit C.J. Parks on a 51-yard pass, and two plays later, Chris Street ran 14 yards for the Mater Dei score and 14-point lead, 28-14. Parks fielded a punt and crossed across the field for a 67-yard return and caught a 7-yard TD pass on the next play from Daniels.

Santa Margarita got good field position on the kick and marched down the field for a 2-yard TD pass from Norwood to Malone Mataele on fourth down. Norwood finished 13 of 24 passing for 267 yards and three touchdowns.

Shakobe Harper took Mater Dei’s next play 80 yards on a handoff down the Monarch sideline for the score and 21-point lead. Santa Margarita took advantage of some penalties and Chad Magyar scored on a 6-yard run. Mater Dei responded two plays later on a 63-yard TD run by Street. The Monarchs closed out the first-half scoring on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Horace McCoy III. Daniels threw two more touchdowns both to St. Brown in the third quarter, 24 yards and 7 yards.
