Santa Margarita lights up the scoreboard again in rout of Mayfair

LAGUNA HILLS – Running back Chad Magyar and No. 5 Santa Margarita continued to play like a boulder rolling downhill Thursday night.

Magyar picked up 214 yards and two touchdowns on the ground as Santa Margarita beat Mayfair, 49-3, on the Eagles’ homecoming night at Laguna Hills High.

“It’s just our preparation,” Magyar said. “We know exactly what we’re doing going into the game and we execute when we’re playing. It shows on the scoreboard and shows on our record.”

Santa Margarita (4-0) has outscored its opponents 201-10 in its first four games. The Eagles’ four opponents had a combined record of 8-4 going into Thursday’s game.

“No matter who we’re going against, no matter our opponent,” Magyar said, “we really fight in all stages of the game. When we come out in the second half, we don’t let up. We just keep going and I’m really proud of us for that.”

Santa Margarita was firing on all cylinders from the get-go.

Mayfair went three-and-out and Alex Kilander picked up the first of five sacks by the Eagles.

Santa Margarita coach Rich Fisher was excited about the aggressive defensive efforts and applauded his group’s ability to get all 11 players to the football.

After a punt set Santa Margarita up at the Mayfair 44-yard line, Magyar handled the ball three times on three plays and finished on a 24-yard touchdown run for the opening score.

Mayfair responded with a six-minute drive that killed time and resulted in the Monsoons’ only points of the night on a 24-yard field goal.

Eagles quarterback Josiah Norwood led the next drive and connected on four passes of 10 yards or more around a 27-yard Magyar burst to put the Eagles inside the Mayfair 10. Malone Mataele took the ball out of the wildcat format and scored on a 6-yard run.

Another Mayfair three-and-out ended on the first of two Logan Schwenke sacks, and Santa Margarita had the ball at midfield again.

Jake Thomas broke free on a run that went for 24 yards and Magyar scored from 4 yards out.

Mayfair’s next drive was again a three-and-out that ended on a sack, this one by Matt Lynch, and Santa Margarita set up in Mayfair territory.

Norwood hit Jake Ebach for 24 yards on the sideline, and Mataele carried for 13 yards and two yards to put the Eagles up at halftime, 28-3.

Magyar added his second touchdown on Santa Margarita’s opening drive of the half, and Norwood threw his only touchdown pass of the game – a 10-yarder – to Mark Eaton at the end of the third quarter.

Norwood finished 13 of 22 passing for 203 yards.

Thomas ran in a touchdown late for the final margin, 49-3. Thomas ran for 76 yards.

Despite their dominance, Santa Margarita was again plagued by penalties. The Eagles had 10 penalties accepted for over 100 yards.

Fisher said it was a problem that a lot of teams have at this stage, but it definitely needed to be corrected. With many false starts, Fisher chalked it up to an aggressive offense wanting to get going.
