John is having a solid senior season and has spearheaded the Eagle defensive effort with his consistent play week in and week out. Bennett registered 11 tackles, one sack and a forced fumble against Irvine in Week 13. John collected a career-high 17 tackles at Tustin after picking up 16 the previous week at Aliso Niguel. John had 10 tackles in the Woodbridge game and has registered at least 10 in eight of 12 games this season. Bennett played well against Irvine collecting six tackles and grading out at 79% for the game. Bennett received a 90% grade against Newport Harbor. This came after a seven-tackle performance in Week 7 as he helped limit CdM to 70 rushing yards and 11 first downs. John had another outstanding game at El Toro as he collected 11 tackles. It was the fifth time in six games that Bennett has picked up 10 or more tackles this year. Against Rancho Bernardo in Week 5, John collected 10 tackles and was named Defensive Skill Player of the Game. At San Clemente John picked up nine tackles. Against Dana Hills, John collected a team-high 14 tackles and was honored as the Defensive Lineman of the Game (although he plays outside linebacker). Bennett posted a then career-high 16 tackles against Carlsbad, after collecting 11 tackles vs. Dominguez in Week 1. John leads the team with 141 tackles, and is averaging 10.8 per game. The school record for tackles in a season and per game is 194 and 16.2 by middle linebacker Mike Farris in 1989, and John is on pace to record 152 in 14 games which would be the most ever for an outside linebacker.

1997: Bennett recorded 10 tackles on the season including four in the Trabuco Hills game and two each in the El Modena and Corona del Mar games.

Misc: John now has 151 career tackles, which is good for 14th on the Eagles all-time tackle list. Bennett is a two-year letterman. John has exceptional strength and quickness, and was honored as one of Santa Margarita’s six War Eagles. He has been timed at 4.72 in the 40 and 4.30 in the pro agility. Bennett has a 285 bench press, a 405 squat and a 31" vertical jump.
