Santa Margarita coasts but coach bemoans a sloppy first half

MISSION VIEJO, CA., September 7, 1990 – Santa Margarita coach Jim Hartigan greeted his first victory of his second season with a few misgivings.

Santa Margarita opened its second varsity season with a 27-0 victory over Rancho Bernardo on Friday at Saddleback College behind big games from quarterback Trevor Yankoff and tailback Josh Ireland.

Yankoff ran for two touchdowns and completed 12 of 20 passes for 160 yards and one touchdown. Ireland, an all-CIF performer a year ago as a sophomore, rushed for 139 yards and one touchdown and was on the receiving end of Yankoff's touchdown pass.

Still, Hartigan lamented two first-half turnovers against the first-year school from San Diego County and 60 yards of penalties in the third quarter alone.

"We were sloppy," Hartigan said. "It took us a half to really settle down. We weren't sharp at all. We dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides, but we just have to cut down on the mistakes."

Fumbles in the first quarter twice stalled Santa Margarita drives in Rancho Bernardo territory.

The Eagles didn't register their first score until 1:15 remained in the first half and not before Ireland had rushed for 92 of his yards. Even Ireland was less than impressed with his performance. "I was happy with my second half," he said, “but not at all with my first half."

Ireland said he wasn't picking up his feet enough in the first half, but he still managed to carry the bulk of the Santa Margarita offense. He bullied for 92 yards on 13 carries in the first half, including runs of 34, 12 and 10 yards.

"Overall, I'm pleased," Hartigan said. “But we need to improve for University next week.”
