EAGLES 29, St. John Bosco 23 (BELLFLOWER, Nov. 4, 2005) –   The Eagles gained a season-high 408 yards - including a career-high 157 on the ground by John Angelo – as they defeated the St. John Bosco Braves 29-23 before a crowd of 4,000 at Fr. Frank Ribotta Field.  The win snapped the Eagles’ three-game losing streak to the Braves (3-6, 1-3) and propelled the Eagles (5-4, 2-2) into sole possession of third place in the Serra League.

On Santa Margarita’s opening drive Angelo rushed four times for 27 yards including a 10-yard scoring run at the 9:59 mark.  Jon Daniels (nine of 16 for 191 yards) hit Jacob Gordon for 25 yards and Ross Cumming for 13 for first downs along the way.  Unfortunately the PAT was wide leaving the score 6-0.  The Braves couldn’t advance the ball and punted to Ryan Maxwell who fielded the ball on the host’s 49, dodged three tacklers and sprinted down the right sideline for an apparent touchdown only to see it come back due to a holding call.  After the Eagles were forced to punt the Braves went on an 11-play, 73-yard drive capped by Lawrence Doss’ seven-yard run to make it 7-6 with 0:15 left in the quarter.

The Eagles promptly responded as Angelo broke off a 43-yard run to set up his own one-yard touchdown on a stretch play to help Santa margarita retake the lead at 12-7.  Eric Reisinger’s two-point pass was just off the fingertips of Cumming (team-high 10 tackles).  After forcing a Brave Punt the Eagles went on a 10-play drive that consumed almost six minutes and overcame three penalties to increase the lead to 19-7 when Chris Spangenberg (11 carries for 57 yards) scored from four yards out with 1:56 left in the half.  A personal foul on the kickoff game the Braves great field position at the Eagle 45 where they needed only two plays to score as David Mahr found a wide open Ashton Tureaud for a 37-yard score with 1:17 to go before intermission.  Rather than run out the clock the Eagles went into a two-minute mode as they needed just six plays to march to the host’s six where Reisinger connected on a 24-yard field goal with 0:06 left to make it 22-14 at halftime.

The Eagles turned the ball over twice on fumbled in the third quarter but all the Braves could manage was a field goal which made it 22-17 heading into the fourth quarter.  A JD Dawson interception of an errant Mahr pass on the Eagle 18 ended what could have been the go-ahead touchdown for the Braves; however the Eagles couldn’t capitalize on the momentum change and had to punt.  After stopping the Braves on downs the Eagles marched to the Bosco 46 and faced a third and 14 where Daniels found a streaking Maxwell down the left sideline for a game clinching 46-yard scoring play.   Mahr scored a meaningless touchdown with 0:00 left to close out the scoring.
