Congratulations to QB Chris Rix (Florida State), LB Matt Szkalak (Cal Poly), DB Trent Zinn (Air Force), WR Dustin Creager (Humboldt State), DL John Cappelletti (Cal Lutheran), K Rob Williams (UNLV), WR Donald Wilson (Mt. Sac), and RB Jimmy Herzog (Golden West JC) from the class of 2000 who have committed to play football at the next level.

Orange County All-Star Game Jimmy Herzog to play in the OC All-Star Game
The game annually features the top 72 graduated football players in Orange County. Jimmy started at fullback and had 5 yards rushing on two carries. He also recovered a teammate’s fumble deep in South territory to avert a potentially disastrous turnover. Unfortunately the South team lost 7-13 to the North.

All-League 9 Eagles named All-Sea View League
OL Ryan Lumm, LB Matt Vogel, RB Jimmy Herzog, and DB Tyler Thompson were named 1st Team All-Sea View League. DL John Cappelletti, WR David Doomey, DB Trent Zinn, WR Chris Rix, and LB Jimmy Whithorne were named 2nd Team.

The Eagles finish the season (6-5) with a loss to A.B Miller in the first round of the playoffs. Division I football took it's toll both mentally & physically on the Eagles this season as they ended the season losing 4 of their final 6 games.

Servite 31 - Eagles 27
Chris Rix has an outstanding all around game as he caught five passes for 186 yards and led the team with 41 yards rushing on only three carries. Dlugolecki completed nine of 17 passes for 215 yards and two scores in his first full game of the season. Defensively, senior LB Matt Szkalak posted a career-high 22 tackles - the second most in school history - to lead the defensive effort while junior LB Matt Vogel added in a career-high 15 tackles.

Mater Dei 34 - Eagles 0
In one of the most eagerly anticipated matchups in Orange County football history, the Mater Dei Monarchs handed the Eagles their first shutout with a convincing 34-0 win before an estimated 17,000 at Edison International Field. Although the Eagles had an off night solid efforts were turned in by several players including junior tackle Ryan Lumm who was named Offensive Lineman of the Game for the 3rd straight week.

Eagles 35 - St. John Bosco 17
The Eagles used four touchdowns from Tyler Thompson to rebounded from their loss to Alemany to post a commanding 35-17 win over St. John Bosco. The win was both the 100th in school history as well as for Head Coach Jim Hartigan. With the win improved the Eagles to 6-2 and into a tie with Mater Dei atop the Serra League standings at 1-0, while the Braves fell to 2-6, 0-1.

Alemany 42 - Eagles 28
After quickly falling behind 14-0, senior WR Donald Wilson took a handoff on a reverse and found QB Chris Rix who raced 64 yards for his first receiving touchdown. After Scott's third touchdown, the Eagles mounted a seven-play, 71-yard drive capped by a one-yard run by Jimmy Herzog (11 carries for 55 yards) with 0:40 left in the half to close the lead to 21-14.

Eagles 35 - Bishop Amat 26
The Eagles ushered in Division I Catholic school competition with a solid 35-26 win over previously undefeated Bishop Amat before 6,000 at Saddleback College. The match up pitted two of the three winningest programs in State history and to this point was the highest profile opponent the Eagles had ever faced.

Eagles 38 - Ranco Bernardo 21
Senior QB Chris Rix led the way as he set a school record for completion percentage by completing 17 of 20 passes for a season high 258 yards and his first scoring pass of the season. His 85% mark broke Sean O'Brien's record of 84.6% set in 1992. Dustin Creager enjoyed his best game yet catching a career-high 10 passes for 156 yards - the 11th best receiving yardage game in Eagle history.

Eagles 43 - San Clemente 7
The Eagles were clicking on all cylinders as they rolled up a school record 435 yards rushing in routing the San Clemente Tritons 43-7 before a Homecoming Crowd of 6,000 at Saddleback College. Jimmy Herzog had 17 carries for 142 yards, 2 Tds. A 52-yard run by Rix and a 41-yard run by Freshman Ashton White (6 carries for 77 yards in his varsity debut) closed out the Eagle scoring. Defensively, the Eagles limited the Triton's "Fly" offense to 218 yards after allowing 446 the year before. Szkalak's 15 tackles led the way while Matt Vogel and Jimmy Whithorne added 12 each.

Eagles 2 - Dana Hills 0
Offensively, Jimmy Herzog had his best game as an Eagle rushing for 161 yards on 28 carries while Rix added 75. The team rushed for a season-high 249 yards, but passed for only 17 total yards. Defensively, senior LB Matt Szkalak led the team for the third consecutive week with 13 tackles.

Carlsbad 40 - Eagles 20
Santa Margarita struggled offensively all night and managed only 231 yards of total offense. The bright spots for the Eagles were the play of junior QB Matt Dlugolecki who completed 9-13 passes for 94 yards including five-yard touchdown to senior WR Dustin Creager, and a dazzling 72-yard touchdown run by senior QB Chris Rix on a quarterback draw in the third quarter. Defensively, Jimmy Whithorne and Matt Szkalak recorded 11 tackles each. Junior David Doomey tied an Eagle record with two field goals in a game hitting from 33 and 40 yards out.

Eagles 24 - Lincoln 6
Newcomer Jimmy Herzog rushed for two touchdowns and running mate Tyler Thompson rushed for another as Santa Margarita opened their eleventh varsity season with a commanding 24-6 win over San Diego Lincoln. WR Dustin Creager had 3 rec., 74 yards. Defensively, the Hornets (0-1) managed only three pass completions in 18 attempts and registered only eight first downs. Senior linebacker Matt Szkalak led the defense with 13 tackles including ½ sack and a fumble recovery, while Matt Vogel (nine tackles, ½ sack) Schmidt (fumble recovery, 1 ½ sacks), Trent Zinn (interception) and Creager (interception) played key rolls.

Eagles Rankined in Top 50 Nationally
Santa Margarita Football was named to the inaugural FOX Sports Fab 50 as one of the top 50 HS Football programs in the nation. Congratulations to Coach Jim Hartigan, his coaching staff, the parents and especially all of those seniors in the past & present who have" stuck it out till the end" over the years dedicating their time and energy to SMCHS football. This award was given not only to the present team, but those of the past, and the teams to come.
