McNown, Farris Make All-America First Team

LOS ANGELES - UCLA quarterback Cade McNown and offensive left tackle Kris Farris have both been selected to the Associated Press All-America first team. Free safety Larry Atkins was named to the second unit.

Here is the complete list of post-season honors, as of December 15.

Cade McNown has been named winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented to the nations top senior quarterback, and placed third in the Heisman Trophy balloting. He was one of three finalists for the Davey OBrien National Quarterback Award and one of three finalists for the Maxwell Award for outstanding all-around player. He has selected first-team All-America by the American Football Coaches Assn. and Associated Press and second-team by The Sporting News. He was also selected Pac-10 co-Offensive Player of the Year and co-first-team quarterback. In addition, he was one of five finalists for the Football News Offensive Player of the Year Award.

Kris Farris has been named the recipient of the 1998 Outland Trophy, presented to the nations top interior lineman. He has also been named first-team All-America by the Walter Camp Foundation, the Football Writers Association of America, Associated Press, The Sporting News, Football News and CollegeSportsNews.com.

Larry Atkins has been selected second-team All-America by Associated Press, The Sporting News, Football News and CollegeSportsNews.com. He was one of 10 semifinalists for the Thorpe Award (Defensive Back) and was one of 15 semifinalists for the Football News Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Head coach Bob Toledo was one of five finalists for the Football News Coach of the Year Award and one of six finalists for the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Award. He was also one of 10 finalists for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award.

Offensive coordinator Alan Borges was one of five finalists for the Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the Year Award.

Quarterback Cade McNown, wide receiver Danny Farmer, offensive linemen Kris Farris and Andy Meyers, tight end Mike Grieb, safety Larry Atkins and outside linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo were all selected first-team All-Pac-10 by the leagues coaches. Center Shawn Stuart earned second team acclaim. Defensive end Kenyon Coleman, inside linebacker Ryan Nece, split end Brian Poli-Dixon, return specialist Ryan Roques and punter/plack kicker Chris Sailer earned honorable mention.

Center Shawn Stuart has been voted to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America first team. Stuart, kicker Chris Sailer and offensive guard Andy Meyers have been voted to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District-8 team. All three players, plus wide receiver Danny Farmer and linebacker Ramogi Huma were selected to the Pac-10 All-Academic team.

Tailback DeShaun Foster was selected first-team freshman All-America by The Sporting News and Football News. Inside linebacker Ryan Nece was also a first-team freshman All-America selection by The Sporting News.
