There are a lot of things you probably don't know about FSU's redshirt freshman quarterback Chris Rix. In this story get to know the personal side of the 20-year old signal caller. You will be surprised.

Everyone knows that Chris Rix is a redshirt freshman from Santa Margarita, California with a strong arm and a cool hair cut. However, there's a lot more to Florida State's quarterback than meets the eye.

Chris Rix

Rix is the first freshman to start a season for Bobby Bowden

Many people who have not met FSU's 6'3", 210-pound signal caller mistakenly assume he's your typical cocky football jock. It's easy to make that snap judgement since Rix is a smart-looking 20-year old and is the starting quarterback on the highest profile team in all of college football. He has every reason to be a little full of himself, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Rix is a humble, spiritual young man who is well grounded in his beliefs and dedication to his friends and family. Perhaps it was his difficult childhood that forced him to mature quicker than most his age. You see Rix lost his mother when he was just a child.

"She passed away when I was seven in 1989," Rix said about his mother. "It's been a while but I still remember her and she's still with me every day and I know that she gives me strength to go on and to be successful. I just hope she would be proud of me."

In addition to his family, friends mean a lot to the 20-year old quarterback. Perhaps his best friend on the team is wide receiver Joey Kaleikini. The two spend a great deal of time together and Rix frequently stays with Kaleikini's family in Niceville when he can't make the trip back to California.

"The biggest unique thing about Chris is in light of all the publicity he gets he stays so humble about everything," Kaleikini said. "For me, I look up to that aspect of him, his humility and that strength he has."

Rix & Kaleikini
Last spring when Kaleikini had his car stereo stolen his friend came to the rescue. The former walk-on had planned to spend spring break working in order to pay the $100 insurance deductible. Rix, who often doesn't have enough money to fly home during breaks, gave his friend money so he could spend the week of spring break with his family.

"I didn't even bring it up to plea for that and then he just came out of nowhere one day when we were down in the car he just said 'this is a favor as a friend'," Kaleikini said. "Because of that I got to spend some time with my family over the spring."

In addition to his down to earth personality, the other misunderstood aspect of the Seminoles' young QB may be his ethnicity. At first glance most believe Rix is the typical Anglo-Saxon from California, but there is a part of his race most are unaware of.

"My mom was Filipino before she passed away," Rix said. "My dad is Irish and German. I take tremendous pride in my mom's side, and I love both sides of my family... A lot of people think that I'm Caucasian but I'm half Filipino and I'm proud of that."

Rix is also different from your typical college student in how he spends his free time. While most of his classmates spend their free time out partying or some other exciting endeavor, Rix prefers to say at home and unwind.

"Relaxing is something I'm always content with," Rix said. "On Friday or Saturday night in the off-season you can just stay home and relax. I don't need to be out involved in something."

Chris Rix

Cool hair?

Like his predecessor, Chris Weinke, hair may be Rix' most noticeable physical trait. However, unlike FSU's former QB, who had a thinning hairline, Rix' hair stands out for a different reason, it is neatly groomed and spiked. Like former head coach Jimmy Johnson, every hair on Rix' head always seems to be in perfect order. This sometimes results in friendly barbs from his friends and teammates.

"People always ask me after practice 'how do you get your hair to look so good after practice'," Rix said. "It takes about a minute... It's not like I take a lot of time on it but the guys are always busing my chops how my hair is perfect, supposedly."

The other unique thing about FSU's new No. 16 is his snappy old black mustang given to him by his brother, Luis, when he turned 18. The most distinctive part of Rix' classic wheels is a personalized license plate that says 'LK OUT DB' for 'look out defensive backs'.

"It was something fun warning DBs everywhere that Chris Rix is here. My high school teammates really got a kick out of it and my coach did."

Person he most wants to meet: Joe Montana

Favorite Music:
A like pretty much all kinds of music. Not that I have anything against country but I really don't listen to it much. Pretty much everything else I listen too. The music that probably makes me feel the best is praise and worship. I have a lot of praise and worship CDs from my pastor. Also, R&B and a little bit of hip-hop.

Favorite food: Philippine & Italian (pasta, pizza) & seafood
I eat more than the linemen, really. Whenever I hang out with Pete Boulware and Corey Simon I out-eat them all the time. They are like 'how do you do it?' since they can never eat as much as I do.
